Disclaimer to begin: I try not to be part of this country’s rage culture, where apocalyptic social media howls of FIRE THAT GUY!! only fortify the ripples of cheap debate permeating a country filled with more screamers than listeners. It is customary for Tom Devitt, the effortlessly upbeat general manager of “Friends Of The Heights,” Boston College’s NIL collective, to begin and end conversations with an absorbing, “it’s a great day to be an Eagle.”Perhaps in days gone by one might have quibbled with Devitt’s proclivity for positivity. But now? Truer words were never spoken.

Dec. 5—The conversation, I'd imagine, would start this way:Me: "Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It's been too long since my last confession."Father: "What are your sins, my son?"Me: "Well, there's one I need to get off my chest."Father: "Of course, my son."Me: "I'm a baseball traditionalist."Father: "Oh, I see. Been getting a lot of this lately. OK. Say three Our Fathers, two Doug Flutie Hail Marys and avoid sports talk radio."AdvertisementMe: "Thank you, Father."Ahhhhh. My sin(s) forgiven.
