ALTAIR — Goliad coach Stacy Zamzow wasn’t sure exactly what to expect from this year’s girls track and field team. The Tigerettes lost a number of key pieces from last year’s team that finished second at the state meet. “When you lose the group we had last year and come back with two girls basically, you don’t know,” Zamzow said. “You just fight and fight, improving in practice and girls coming around. WHARTON — Jason Haddock considers former Wharton head football coach Russell Roberts a mentor in the profession. Roberts led Wharton to five playoff appearances during his seven years at the school. Wharton has fallen on hard times as of late, making its last trip to the postseason in 2019. Haddock hopes to bring success back to the program after being named Wharton’s athletic director and head football coach by a unanimous vote of the board of trustees at a special meeting Tuesday evening.

Kamryn Jackson had surgery before her senior season of basketball at Victoria East. But Jackson was determined not to let it hinder her style of play. “It definitely affected me, but I had my support system,” Jackson said. “My coach and my trainer all supported me. I just got back in the gym and got to work.”The hard work allowed Jackson to average 10 points and 8.2 rebounds a game for the Lady Titans last season.

HALLETTSVILLE — The reason for Hallettsville’s loss to Columbus was no mystery to Lady Brahmas’ head coach Callie Kresta. “When we get out-hit we have a hard time winning games,” Kresta said. “We’ve got to go out and earn our keep.”Hallettsville managed only three hits and struck out nine times against Columbus starter Mia Post, and dropped a 3-1 District 25-3A decision Friday night at City Park Field.
