The end of the one-cent coin looks to be approaching a reality in the United States now that President Donald Trump has announced he is moving forward with the plan to end the “penny” due to its increasing cost burden on taxpayers. On February 9, President Trump posted on Truth Social, “For far too long, the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents. This is so wasteful! I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies.
