What I loved most about my time as CFPC President was talking to members and discovering their passion for family medicine. Despite facing challenges in practices and within health systems, they truly love being family doctors and are committed to their communities and making the practice of family medicine sustainable. I was not surprised by this dedication, and I loved constantly hearing about members’ commitment, regardless of where they lived.

As you read this I will have just returned from the WONCA Rural—Ubuntu 2024 conference in Cape Town, South Africa.1 There, doctors from around the world met to discuss the importance of providing high-quality care to people living in rural and remote communities and brainstormed how we can make sure people living in these settings have the same access to care as their urban counterparts.

July marks the start of residency, and the beginning of a career in family medicine, for the record 1627 new postgraduate year 1 (PGY1) residents joining our specialty this year. This is more residents than ever before and an increase of almost 100 more than last year.1 The increase in PGY1 family medicine residents reflects the ongoing implementation of expansion plans for family medicine programs across the country.
