We’ve all seared a track map of the perfect road course in our minds. These are public roads that wind around a nearby reservoir, cut through a patchwork of farmland, or—for at least one extremely irresponsible driver lamming it in Canada—around the island of Manhattan. I have several, each corresponding to a place I’ve lived. My first street course was about eight miles long. Half tarmac and half gravel, it passed through pine and maple forests and circled the York County transfer station twice.

John Frankenheimer was a hero. An amateur racer in his twenties, the director crossed a Kurtzian line of sanity with his 1966 racing film, Grand Prix, placing art above safety. Frankenheimer shot Graham Hill and other drivers at racing speeds, and several near-fatal wrecks made it into the film. This kind of all-in dedication would have today’s movie audience cringing. It is also the last year of the 993, Porsche’s final air-cooled 911, arguably marking the end of the greatest production era in sports-car history. If you haven’t yet acquired your 993 C2S, then hurry! Or don’t.
