Posted March 30, 2025 at 1:53 AM EDT As of early Sunday morning, more than 100,000 electric customers in northern Michigan were without power, including nearly all of the Alpena Power Company's service area. Alpena Power Company was reporting 16,386 customers without power, which makes up over 97% of its customers. Presque Isle Electric & Gas customers were also hard hit, with 27,554 outages reported. Great Lakes Energy and Consumers Energy were reporting around 37,000 outages a piece.

WCML 91.7FM and WCML TV Channel 6 have returned to the air in the northeast Lower Peninsula, just over five months after WCMU's transmitter site west of Alpena was destroyed by a fire. The stations are currently broadcasting from a temporary facility at reduced power. WCMU's broadcast signals in the northeast are expected to cover at least 70 percent of their normal coverage area, meaning most area residents can once again tune in to their NPR and PBS stations.

Winter storm warnings are posted for the entire WCMU listening area through Saturday evening. In northeast lower Michigan, blizzard warnings have been issued by the Weather Service. Snow will gradually spread into the area during the day. The Tri-Cities are expecting six to 11 inches of snow. The rest of mid-Michigan, northwest lower Michigan, the upper peninsula and Ontario will see eight to 14 inches of snow.

Updated Sat. June 3, 2023 at 8:20pm Local, state and federal fire crews are battling a 1,000-acre wildfire southeast of Grayling. According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, multiple buildings are in danger, and evacuations are being conducted by emergency personnel. At 6:30pm Saturday, June 3, the fire was located about 4 miles southeast of Grayling in Grayling Township, near Staley Lake Road.
