While his American nationality is notable, it’s his connection to ‘social justice’ issues that is drawing attention across the Christian world.

At one level, it doesn’t matter at all whether the new pope is a progressive or a conservative. Whatever his theological leanings, the fact remains that the Roman Catholic church stands in grave and serious error against the true gospel of Christ. It does not teach salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Therefore, evangelicals may be tempted to say ‘so what?’ to the election of a new pope. The Roman Catholic Church has a new pope—and for the first time in history, he’s an American. Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, has stepped onto the world stage. Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals has referred nurse Jennifer Melle to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), who said in a letter that Jennifer is ‘a potential risk’ for not using the preferred ‘gender identity’. To add insult to injury, she has since been suspended for speaking to the media about the injustice of her ordeal.

The UK Supreme Court has handed down a ruling that the legal definition of a woman is based on biology, not transgender ideology. This is undoubtedly a landmark ruling. While it does not overturn the legal protections that already exist for transgender people, it does clearly state that – for the purposes of the Equality Act – a person’s sex is binary and defined by biology. The decision has been hailed by those fighting to protect single-sex spaces and freedom of speech.

Major doubts now surround the contentious bill which aims to legalise assisted suicide bill in England and Wales, after the bill’s sponsor — Kim Leadbeater MP (pictured) — announced a big delay in the bill’s implementation. If the bill does get passed by Parliament — and that’s a big “if” — it won’t likely be implemented until 2029, after the next General Election. A new government could decide to drop it altogether. However, there are no guarantees about that.
