The Silsbee police chief is out of jail on bond following his arrest on a charge of public intoxication in the Texas Hill country. Staff at the Gillespie County Jail tell our news partner KFDM News that according to jail records, 48-year-old James Shawn Keith Blackwell was arrested Monday by the Fredericksburg Police Department on a charge of public intoxication. They didn't provide details of the arrest. Blackwell was released on a $500 surety bond, according to staff.

The staff of the Newton County Public Library is inviting everyone to come out and have a blast as they kick off the summer reading program “Bubble Blitzers” which is a special event featuring wet fun with soap, water, foam and bubbles. The special opening party will be held on Tuesday July 1st, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the open field across from the library. They remind everyone to come in swim attire and possibly a change of clothes if needed a towel and anything else is needed to get wet.

Steve Bulicz, 76, of Colmesneil, Texas, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2025 at his residence. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date. Steve was born November 14, 1948 in Boise, Idaho. He had lived in Colmesneil for the past 4 years having moved from Las Vegas, Nevada and Toquerville, Utah. Steve was a retired welder with the Teamsters Union. He enjoyed fishing, diving and playing pool. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Colmesneil.

Jasper County Sheriff Chuck Havard and his deputies were busy early Tuesday evening searching for a special needs teen and shortly before 8:00, Havard reported that the girl had been found and that she was safe and sound. Havard says the girl is 17 and autistic, and she went missing from her home on Farm to Market Road 252 about a mile north of the Kirbyville city limits and was believed to be in a wooded area.

Jury selection is scheculed to begin today in the Jasper County Courthouse in the trial of Breanna Minter McMullen, who is one of two people charged with the February 2002 murder of her former father in law Rexie McMullen II. Police allege that Breanna McMullen along with her boyfriend Paul James Taucer, 34, of Buna, shot and killed Rexie McMullen before setting his home in the 1300 block of Milam Street here in Jasper on fire.
