The Russell girls posted a 20-point first quarter and used a smothering defensing effort to grab a 45-26 win over Trego in the play-in round of the Mid-Continent League Tournament on Saturday, January 18 at the Kennedy Middle School Gym in Hays. The Lady Broncos led 20-6 after one quarter and 26-10 at halftime. Russell outscored the Golden Eagles 14-5 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 40-15 and never saw their lead fall below 16 in the fourth.

The Russell City Council will meet on Tuesday, January 21 at 4:30 PM at City Hall. Items on the agenda include employee of the quarter recognition, November and December Community Impact Award presentations, look at current water supply levels, new and renewal of 2025-26 contractor licenses, senior housing development real estate agreement, department reports, Kansas Open Meetings and Records Act review and one executive session to discuss non-elected personnel. The meeting is open to the public.

Girls: Central Plains 49, Victoria 29Boys: Central Plains 52, Victoria 27Two Central Prairie League rivals met up Friday, January 17 in Victoria as the Knights and Lady Knights hosted Central Plains. Victoria grabbed an early 4-0 lead in the girls game. But after that, it was all Central Plains. The Lady Oilers, ranked #4 in Class 1A Division 1, used a 15-0 run over the first and second quarters and led 23-11 at halftime.

Local KDOT Announces Approved Highway Bids Written By: Mike McKenna Published Date: 01-16-2025 The Kansas Department of Transportation has announced approved bids for state highway construction and maintenance projects. The following project was approved in the November 20 letting. In Hoisington in Barton County, a pavement reconstruction of U.S 281 and K-4 Highway from North Center Street to North Main Street awarded to Morgan Brothers Construction of LaCrosse in the amount of $1,489,285.02.
