They were left without essential provisions for five days after the freezers and chillers at their only supermarket failed. THE most remote mainland shop in Scotland has been sold after being in the same family for over 100 years. The convenience store is also home to mainland UK's most north westerly post office and cash machine. It is located on the popular North Coast 500 road trip route and is described as a community hub. But the owners of Richard Mackay and Son, at Durness in Sutherland, are now selling up. Robbie Mackay has run it for the last 40 years.

The business, Richard Mackay and Son, at Durness, has been run by Robbie Mackay for the last 40 years and is the most north-westerly grocery shop in Britain. Mr Mackay’s wife, Fiona, said it was both a “sad and exciting time”, and thanked customers for their support over the years.
