At the risk of sounding like a bears fan, I think we have a lot to look forward to next year. Last week I did the negative overlook of what we need to accomplish this offseason, so why don’t we go through some bullet points of how good the team already is this year. Try to feel a little better after that annoying game. – The defense was really good. Better than it has been in Matt LaFleur’s tenure (by far). And probably better than any year since the super bowl year.

Over and over this past season we heard that the Badgers’ problem was simply that they had no identity. No one really explains what that means – though you can infer that it used to be run the ball and have a good defense (until they play the top spread teams at least). The Packers’ identity is also pretty easy to divine. Let’s discuss. The offensive identity is probably clearer than it has been in years. Give Josh Jacobs the ball. Years ago the Titoons attempted to run an “exotic smashmouth” offense.

The peak Popovich Spurs started the NBA’s player rest trend. The team knew it was full of vets who could turn it on in the playoffs, so they rested veterans often during the latter half of the season and played rookies and other young players who otherwise wouldn’t have gotten playtime. The Packers coaches could learn from this strategy over the next several games.

Toyoathon has started and winter has come and the Packers offense is inevitable. Think about what you need for a successful modern offense. You start with a quarterback who can make every throw and a wide receiver who can stretch the defense—force the defense to stick with two high safeties, which they want to anyway. Next, you need a consistent run game. A run game that you can depend on in almost every situation. And a running back who will level up as the defense wears down. But, that’s not enough.

Christian Watson has been an enigma in his Packers career. Outside of a few huge games his rookie year he’s been more potential than production. That changed this week. Watson was shot out of a canon literally and figuratively in his rookie year. He had three hundred-yard games and seven touchdowns in the second half of the season.
