It didn’t take long for Buchholz High School to find its new head baseball coach. Associate head coach Chris Malphurs was selected to lead the Bobcats’ program after longtime BHS Athletics Director and baseball coach Ron Brooks retired last week. “Coach Malphurs has helped Coach Brooks this past season as his main assistant coach,” said new Buchholz Athletics Director Billy Pankey. “He also has several years of prior head coaching experience throughout the county.

David S. Lowery is coming back to Gainesville. Last week Santa Fe College announced the hiring of the former Gator assistant women’s basketball coach as its new women’s head basketball coach. “I am ecstatic to join the Santa Fe College family and so thankful to Chanda Stebbins, Dr. Naima Brown, and President Dr. Paul Broadie II for entrusting me with this incredible opportunity to become the next head women’s basketball coach,” Lowery said.

Last year, it took a walk-off win in the FHSAA Class 1A state semifinals against Holmes County (Bonifay) and a miracle comeback against Branford in the championship game for Trenton softball to win the school’s third state title since 2019. “I think last year we were really nervous,” said left fielder Charleigh Philmon, one of only four seniors on the roster. “I think we were a young team. All Area soccer players Sean Allin (Santa Fe), Maximus Dietz (Newberry), and Christopher Zeppieri (P.K. Yonge) never won a state title in high school. But over Mother’s Day weekend, the trio helped lead a local club soccer team, the Men’s Under-19 Inter Gainesville KF Academy, to the Florida State Cup. The journey began with single-elimination games back in October and culminated with the semifinals on May 10, followed by the championship game.

Eastside boys basketball player Audric Garciso didn’t make the freshman or sophomore basketball teams at Buchholz. He also sat on the bench during his junior season at Eastside. But on Thursday, he locked down a college basketball opportunity when he signed with Cebu Institute of Technology University (CIT University) in the Philippines. “I am so proud of myself for managing to get to this level,” he said. “I started from the bottom four years ago.
