Things were looking good for the Trenton baseball team on Wednesday afternoon in the FHSAA Rural State Semifinals at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers. The No. 3 seed Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but No. 2 seed Lafayette (Mayo) scored five unanswered runs in a 5-1 win, ending the Tigers’ season at 24-5. “This isn’t a team we have here in Trenton, it’s a family,” said Trenton coach Chris Marlo following the game. “These players love playing for one another.

It’s been a special year for Newberry High School athletics. Five more Newberry scholar-athletes reaped the benefits and will get the opportunity to play college sports. On Tuesday afternoon, Anna Grace Bennett (New College of Florida), Malana Kennard (Florida Gateway College), Sarah Priester (Baptist University of Florida), Jacob Green (Baptist University of Florida), and Amiri Legette (Gordon State College) signed with their respective new schools.

The defending FHSAA Class 1A state champion Trenton softball team is headed back to the final four. On Tuesday night at John A. Vickers Field, solo home runs by senior shortstop Olivia Weaver and sophomore catcher MacKenzie Fisher were the difference in a 2-1 win at home against Williston in the FHSAA Rural Region 4 Final. “It feels amazing,” said first-year head coach and former Tigers’ assistant Kevin Benson.

For the second consecutive year, the Trenton and Buchholz baseball teams are back in the final four. In 2024, Trenton upset Newberry, 4-3, in the Class 1A-Region 4 Final to advance to its first state semifinal since 2018, while Buchholz edged Hagerty (Oviedo), 1-0, to earn its first trip to the state tournament in program history. The Tigers, who won Class 1A state titles in 2013 and 2017, lost in the state semifinals to Bozeman (Panama City), 10-0, while Buchholz finished as state runners-up.

With their backs against the wall, the Buchholz baseball team found a way. On Saturday night, the Bobcats defeated nationally ranked No. 20 Pace on the road, 5-4, in eight innings in game three of a best-of-3 FHSAA Class 6A-Region 1 Final. Blake Brewer’s one-run double in the top of the eighth inning helped lead the Bobcats (32-2), who are ranked 11th nationally by MaxPreps, to the final four for the second consecutive season.

F - Lafayette (Mayo) 5, Trenton 1 #FHSAA Baseball Rural State Semifinals No. 2 seed Hornets (25-2) will play top seed Holmes County (25-4) for the state title at 4 p.m. on Thursday. A total of 12 Ks for Ethan Tuten, who threw over 100 pitches. Trenton's season ends at 24-5.
