Metamorpho is one of the older DC Comics heroes, with roots dating back to the middle of DC's Silver Age. Formerly known as Rex Mason, Metamorpho operated as an adventurer working for Simon Stagg when he encountered a strange Egyptian artifact. Being exposed to the source of that alien artifact changed Rex irreparably, transforming him into a man who could transform himself into anything on the periodic table: Metamorpho.

The Golden Age was filled with costumed mystery men using themed gimmicks to fight crime. Batman paired a creature of the night theme with equipment, detective skills, and fighting abilities. His popularity skyrocketed. The success of Batman meant many other characters following in his footsteps but not surpassing him. Many publishers used the Batman formula for new heroes, and DC did it with Green Arrow. Created two years after Batman, Green Arrow had all the same trappings.

A great cover can draw in casual readers, but a poor cover can turn off an already loyal fanbase. Covers can be misleading. Justice League covers in the Silver Age were weird and depicted impossible situations. Covers today depict intense action scenes. As much as comic books have changed, from layout and composition to storytelling itself, having an eye-catching cover has always been important. When it comes to the Justice League of America, the more heroes and villains on the cover, the better.
