When I first speak with guitarist Tashi Dorji over Zoom, it is an unseasonably warm October day. Our different locations—Dorji’s, a small valley town on the outskirts of Asheville, North Carolina, and mine, New York City—both display leaves in peak fall colors: carotenoids and anthocyanins painting deep yellows, crimsons, and neon electric shades of orange across our disparate landscapes.

For more than two hundred years, the Tibetan Empire was one of the greatest military, political, and cultural forces in all of Central Asia, maybe even the entire world, ruling over a vast territory that included parts of modern-day Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, China, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan and making seemingly countless contributions to the spheres of philosophy and religion.

While some dhamma teachers go to great lengths to promote their teachings—visiting different temples and monasteries around the world and speaking before vast crowds—others focus solely on practicing and living in accordance with the dhamma. Phra Ajahn Suchart Abhijāto, a teacher in the Thai Forest Tradition, sits firmly within this second group. Born in 1947, Ajahn Suchart was raised by his grandmother in rural Suphan Buri, just northwest of Bangkok.
