Introduction Nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds are important structural motifs that are ubiquitous in a plethora of biologically relevant compounds which include agrochemicals,1 pharmaceuticals,2 natural products and dyes.3 Their structural significance is readily quantified as 59 % of US FDA approved small-molecule drugs contain a nitrogen heterocycle,4 with these heterocycles commonly incorporated into molecules to improve physicochemical properties.
