Within a minute of being sworn in Friday as a state District Court judge in Butte-Silver Bow County, Frank Joseph completed his first official act: swearing in Robert Whelan for a second term on the bench across the Courthouse hall. Joseph and Whelan practiced together in the same law firm in Butte for several years before Whelan was elected to his first term as a Montana District Court judge in 2018.

Gov. Jeff Landry announced Wednesday he was mobilizing a military police company from the Louisiana National Guard in the aftermath of the vehicle and shooting attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans that killed 10 people and injured dozens. The force will assist local law enforcement, state police and the FBI, he said. Landry said he also issued an emergency declaration to free up necessary resources to respond to the attack.
