The NHL Alumni Association announced on Thursday that former Detroit Red Wings defenseman and Hockey Hall of Fame member Nicklas Lidstrom is the inaugural recipient of the Borje Salming Courage Award. This distinct honor is named after Hall of Fame defenseman Borje Salming, one of the first European players to make the jump to the NHL back in 1973 and is considered in the eyes of many as a trailblazer in paving the way for the NHL's current European pipeline.

A rocky start to the season in Edmonton just got rockier. The Edmonton Oilers made a massive swing behind the bench on Sunday, relieving head coach Jay Woodcroft of his duties after parts of three seasons with the club. In a corresponding move, the Oilers announced that Kris Knoblauch will take over as the new coach, elevating him from his prior role as coach of the New York Rangers' AHL affiliate in Hartford.

A disastrous start to the season in Edmonton just got worse. The Edmonton Oilers made a shocking move on Tuesday, placing goaltender Jack Campbell on waivers for the purpose of assigning him to the AHL. Based purely on the 31-year-old's play, Campbell's exodus from the Oilers' roster isn't too surprising. In 36 games for the club last season, Campbell put up some of the worst numbers of his career, finishing with a .888 save percentage while allowing nearly 17 more goals than the average netminder.

The Carolina Hurricanes announced goaltender Frederik Andersen will be out of action indefinitely due to a blood clotting issue discovered during recent medical testing. No timeline for Andersen's return has been provided, although the club does expect him to make a full recovery. Andersen had started six games this season before his absence, compiling a 4-1-0 record with a .894 save percentage.
