Something illegal was hiding in an American couple’s backpack as they crossed the Mexico border into the United States — and it wasn’t drugs, officials say. As the 20-year-old man and 21-year-old woman attempted to enter the U.S. at the Anzalduas International Bridge on April 6, border officials found the conspicuous cargo inside their Chevrolet Equinox, according to an April 9 news release.

When an Illinois lottery player received an email indicating she won a prize, she figured she simply won back the $2 she spent on the game. The seven-figure prize that awaited her left her stunned, Illinois Lottery officials say. The winner, who remained anonymous, won $1 million in the April 3 Lotto Million 1 drawing. She purchased the ticket through the Illinois Lottery app. "I figured that I'd won back the $2 that I had spent on the ticket," she told lottery officials in an April 10 news release.

A deer crashed through a window of a James Beard Award-nominated bar, causing brief panic for one of its workers. "Hi little fella. The Boone County Sheriff’s Office said the two women were passengers in a Chevrolet Equinox that was stopped at an intersection in Walton on April 8. The 66-year-old driver of the SUV tried to make a left turn when the vehicle crossed into the path of a dump truck hauling gravel.

A man is accused of killing his 76-year-old mother with a broken broomstick handle, Michigan officials say. Armando Jourdain Streeter, 46, now faces several charges, including second-degree murder, following the April 5 death of his mother in their St. Clair Shores home, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office. Loretta Streeter, 76, was discovered dead with "the end of a broom stick impaled in one of her eyes," the Macomb Daily reported.
