ONGOING SHORTAGES of skilled building tradespeople are not the result of a booming housing construction market, according to the Housing Industry Association (HIA). The last two years of new home commencements have been among the weakest in the past decade. “Australia has just seen its two weakest years of new home commencements in over a decade, meaning these ongoing shortages of skilled trades are not being caused by home building activity,” HIA chief economist Tim Reardon said.
