    Anyone who knows where I grew up remembers the house for one thing: my mom’s flowers. Every summer, people from all over the area would drive to Flournoy just to see the zinnias, marigolds, geraniums and other beautiful blooms in our front yard. It was a stunning display: marigolds that stood out almost like poppies in a field, and zinnias that … well … they just usually didn’t grow that high, or shine so brightly.

    As noted in this space with a fair amount of frequency lately, I’m always surprised when people ask me to speak at their events. I’m lucky that many of those invitations come from journalism classes at Chico State. I never fail to get a charge out of spending an hour or so with the students, and I’m hoping some of them actually learn something from the old guy rambling on about the good old days. There is one thing I always say that I really hope they take to heart.

    "Are you lost?"I get that a lot. Must be a gift. On this particular day, I was wandering around Nash's Restaurant. I'd been invited to a luncheon, and I couldn't find it. (Which, frankly, is a heck of a thing to admit when the luncheon is somewhere within the walls of the restaurant.)I turned around to see who was asking me if I was lost this time, and there sat Sean Morgan, the former mayor of Chico and recently retired city councilor.
