Anyone who knows where I grew up remembers the house for one thing: my mom’s flowers. Every summer, people from all over the area would drive to Flournoy just to see the zinnias, marigolds, geraniums and other beautiful blooms in our front yard. It was a stunning display: marigolds that stood out almost like poppies in a field, and zinnias that … well … they just usually didn’t grow that high, or shine so brightly.

As noted in this space with a fair amount of frequency lately, I’m always surprised when people ask me to speak at their events. I’m lucky that many of those invitations come from journalism classes at Chico State. I never fail to get a charge out of spending an hour or so with the students, and I’m hoping some of them actually learn something from the old guy rambling on about the good old days. There is one thing I always say that I really hope they take to heart.

"Are you lost?"I get that a lot. Must be a gift. On this particular day, I was wandering around Nash's Restaurant. I'd been invited to a luncheon, and I couldn't find it. (Which, frankly, is a heck of a thing to admit when the luncheon is somewhere within the walls of the restaurant.)I turned around to see who was asking me if I was lost this time, and there sat Sean Morgan, the former mayor of Chico and recently retired city councilor.

I wanted to say a hearty “Well Done” to our 1st District U.S. Congressman the honorable Doug LaMalfa. Today I received a “capital gains tax refund” check from the IRS. The refund was for capital gains taxes that I paid on my PG&E Camp Fire Settlement. Congressman LaMalfa sponsored the original bill that eventually made the settlement payments “tax free.”Me and tens of thousands of other Butte County residents got refunds.

It seems that nearly six weeks has passed since the accident on 1st Avenue that took its toll on my 1994 Honda Del Sol coupe. No one has ever come forward to own up to the hit and run accident that happened on the morning of March 12 at 10:15 a.m. in front of Bidwell Perk. I know material things, cars included, should not be obsessions but when you’ve had something for 31 years, it’s hard to let go.
