It’s easy to compare the NRL and Super League and wonder if it’s even the same sport. In some ways, like when a clear high tackle was punished by a sending off, it seems like they’re moving closer together, a rare moment of unity and sanity across the hemispheres. In others, like when guys who have played the toughest games of their year are asked to back up and play two days later, you wonder if anyone learns anything at all.

Any discussion of Game 1 of State of Origin 2024 starts in the seventh minute, when New South Wales outside back Joseph Sua’ali’i was unceremoniously marched for a high shoulder to the face of Queensland fullback Reece Walsh. It was 6-0 to Queensland at the time and, despite a valiant middle period from NSW, ended 38-10, a record score for the Maroons in Sydney.

The NRL is in its half-baked era with State of Origin on the horizon, but as rain lashed the east coast of Australia, we still got half a round’s worth of fixtures. The round kicked off with Parramatta’s win over Cronulla, with Clint Gutherson and Mitch Moses returning to assist a side that had won three all year to defeat a side that had lost just twice but were missing both Nicho Hynes and Cam McInnes.

If you can’t win, at least be good to watch, right? It’s something that the people of Leeds might be on board with given the success of Marcelo Bielsa in the city. A count of the murals that remain of the Argentine tactical genius following his departure over two years ago would suggest that at least some level of sporting aestheticism is to be expected in the heart of West Yorkshire.

If Mitchell Moses didn’t damage his foot, Brad Arthur would still be Eels coach. But he did and Arthur is not. Moses showed his value to Parramatta at CommBank Stadium on Thursday night by guiding the home side to a much-needed 34-22 win over Cronulla in his comeback from injury.

Feeling very smug about my 'close but shite' theory of the 2025 NRL watching this. #NRLsharksdragons

The NRL is popular, the table is tight and games are unpredictable. Gameplay, however, is conservative, over-officiated and, a lot of the time, quite dull. Undeniably, 2025 has been a successful year for the NRL - but is it any good? @loverugbyleague https://t.co/ys8zGcTgrX

I'm not a knighthoods guy (quite the opposite), but if you want to know why it matters, this is it.

Billy Boston is a true trailblazer who has contributed hugely to rugby league. It’s a historic wrong that a sport which is the backbone of many communities has waited so long to receive this honour. Boston is a legend of the game who overcame prejudice to represent Great

Rugby League (esp in the UK) has done this for years and, after changing that at WC22, is now reaping the benefits in sales for the Ashes. If you discount late, not only does it devalue your product, it also encourages your core fans not to buy early. https://t.co/tHyTLz1KUl
