Yuma Kagiyama trailed Ilia Malinin by just three points after the short program and was in with a chance at his first world title in Boston on Saturday, March 29. However, the steady Japanese star, who has always been reliable under pressure, came undone in his free skate and was lucky to make the podium at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships after a calamitous outing. The 20-year-old Malinin won his second straight world crown with a total score of 318.56 points.

Kaori Sakamoto will look to join a very select club when she takes the ice at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Boston for the short program on Wednesday, March 26. The three-time defending world titlist will be trying to become the first woman to win four straight crowns in 65 years.

World champion Ilia Malinin of the United States moved out to a big lead after the short program at the Grand Prix Final in Grenoble, France, on Friday, December 6. The 20-year-old Malinin will take a nearly 12-point lead over second-place Yuma Kagiyama into Saturday's free skate. Malinin is in first with a score of 105.43 points, with Kagiyama second at 93.49. Kazakhstan's Mikhail Shaidorov is third on 91.26.
