After 20 years of writing for the Guardian – at first on Jobs & Money and more recently as one of the Consumer Champions – this is my last week before I cycle off into the sunset. Over that period I have seen, and reported on, the 2008 financial crash, the boom in bank fraud – and, more recently, the crazy time in people’s finances that was Covid. This is what I have taken from the experience – and how it has informed the way I manage my own finances.

Are private fines sent by Bristol airport’s contractor to motorists who pick up passengers outside its designated, paid-for, drop-off and pickup zone unenforceable? It looks as though they may be, if an eagle-eyed Guardian reader and a leading consumer solicitor are correctly interpreting the bylaws that govern the airport.

For the past three years I have used Churchill to insure my BMW X5. The policy started in June 2021, I have paid by monthly direct debit ever since, and it was set up to auto-renew every year. So imagine my concern when I received a letter last week from Surrey and Sussex police informing me that, according to the Motor Insurance Database, I did not appear to have valid insurance. At first I thought it was a scam, but I felt that I’d better just check with Churchill.
