California is touted now as the nation’s largest economy and also the most populous state. If you look at the headlines, you would think our state is booming. Is doing well good enough? When you read the fine print of the state budget, it has ballooned to a whopping 300 billion dollars. Governor Gavin Newsom is proud that his state will show a deficit this year of ONLY 2 billion. Imagine that! Being thrilled with a small deficit of 2 billion dollars.

However, age has taken its toll, leading to the need for some work and a facelift. Santa Clara Rotary Club, under the leadership of former Assistant Chief of Police and current president Dan Winter, decided it was time for renovation.

Politicians continue to defy gravity and suck residents dry with taxes and obtuse legislation that helps few and hurt many.

The best theatrical show in Santa Clara isn’t at the Santa Clara Players or the Roberta Jones Junior Theater. The biggest show in town is the theatrics on the City Council dais. Every other Tuesday evening, Mayor Lisa Gillmor steps onto the stage and begins her Kabuki knock-down of the fine men and women who serve our proud city. From the mayoral pulpit, Gillmor’s single plotline takes aim at her favorite targets, the 49ers and Levi’s Stadium.

Rosen made sure his opinion was heard in the brief filed with the court that carried his name and title.

If there’s one thing that Santa Clara’s mayor seems to lead in, it’s holding a grudge. Lisa Gillmor once again showed a leopard can’t change its spots when she found fault with anything and everything in the most recent FIFA World Cup contracts guaranteeing that Santa Clara’s costs would be covered. Gillmor is welcome to be upset with FIFA and the 49ers; that’s her prerogative.

Super Bowl Sunday was another explosive event, with Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles triumphing over Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. It was another feather in the cap for New Orleans, which has hosted the NFL’s biggest game 11 times in its history. Santa Clara would also like to host the big game that many times. It’s a boon for the city and the entire Bay Area. It brings attention to our great city and, more importantly, it brings in tax dollars and tourism.

Voters have put two new faces on the council in Kelly Cox and Albert Gonzalez. This is the dawning of a new city council in Santa Clara, and it will be up to the newest members to chart the course.

Imagine if you started a bakery. You took a risk, and naturally, you’ll do everything possible to make the bakery a success. You’ll advertise your business and invite people in for free cookies. You’ll invite local officials and news outlets to a ribbon cutting. What you won’t do is go out and tell the world that your cookies are overpriced, taste terrible, and crooks run the cafes selling them. That would be like killing the goose that lays golden eggs.
