To say that these are curious times for the automotive industry would be something of an understatement. Manufacturers have been regulated towards producing zero emissions vehicles, but the market hasn’t moved with the wishes of the authorities. There’s money in convenience and EVs aren’t seen as convenient yet. People tend to buy cars on what if scenarios, rather than focussing on what they need them for 99% of the time. What if you need to drive to the Lake District?

Please take a moment to prepare the world’s smallest violin. There are points with some of these cars where you begin to wonder, will I be bored by this car? The spec sheets can blend into one: loads of power, plenty more power from a battery, normalised 0-60mph times which should make your head spin but don’t, supported by outlandish aesthetics. It’s a well written and well produced playbook. Do they begin to blend into one, separated only by their badge?

The Easter weekend is great, isn’t it? Schools are off, work slows down and there’s a four-day weekend to lean into. I was lucky enough to spend this year’s with the Ferrari Roma Spider. I’ll put my cards on the table early here: I’m a big fan of Ferrari’s modern GT. In coupe form, it offers the poise and performance you’d expect, with enough luxury to make it – if you’re lucky enough – into a daily driver. Surely chopping the roof of wouldn’t compromise the experience, but would only elevate it?

There’s a certain amount of satisfaction to be taken from something simply yet emphatically meeting expectations. A cold drink on a summer’s day, a good meal with friends, the Bentley Bentayga EWB. It may sound like I’m damning it with faint praise in saying that it meets expectations, but this is a Bentley. Expectations for the Bentayga EWB – extended wheelbase – were lofty to say the least. This is now Bentley’s flagship model, having replaced the Mulsanne which ceased production in 2020.
