FORMER Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse is set to pull on his boots again - as he approaches his 40th birthday. Cisse set the Premier League alight when he joined the Toon and linked up with Senegalese countryman Demba Ba in 2012. The 39-year-old left St James’ Park in the wake of the club’s relegation in 2016 - and he has since had playing spells in China, Turkey and France.

Newcastle United fans have seen a lot of the years – not all of it good. In the Premier League era, there have been highs, lows and everything in between. I documented a lot of what they saw over a 20-odd year period from press boxes up and down the country. You could not make some of it up. I reported on thumping wins, agonising defeats, extraordinary comebacks, bust-ups, wonder strikes along with relegations and promotions. Off the pitch, there were even crazier goings-on.

Wembley beckons – again. It did not take long for those pre-match nerves felt by Newcastle United fans to dissipate at St James’ Park. The first goal was always going to be all-important in last night’s Carabao Cup semi-final, second-leg tie against Arsenal – and so it proved. Eddie Howe’s side, leading 2-0 from the first leg, knew that if they started well, the tie would end well. And so it proved.

The final whistle had gone at the St Mary’s Stadium, but Miguel Almiron, a late substitute, felt a push in the back. Newcastle United had won 3-1 to move up to fourth place in the Premier League, and the club’s players and coaching staff were on the pitch applauding the travelling fans in one corner of the ground. The push came from Eddie Howe as Almiron’s name was chanted by the away end.
