It’s a picture that is equal parts art and science.
At first glance, the green and magenta hues might trick the eye into seeing Venus fly traps or plankton, but the image actually shows differentiated mouse brain tumor cells, highlighting the actin cytoskeleton, microtubules and nuclei of the cells.
Even though the image won a photography contest, it wasn’t made exclusively for art as it’s part of a research study Bruno Cisterna, PhD, submitted to the Journal of Cell Biology.

Augusta University provided a $1.55 billion boost to the economy between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023 – a 14.8 % increase over the previous year – and generated 11,579 jobs during that period, according to a new report from the University System of Georgia (USG).
Those numbers are up from a $1.35 billion economic impact and 10,039 jobs generated the previous year.

Augusta University School of Public Health Dean Teresa Waters, PhD, has announced two permanent additions to her inaugural leadership team, as well as two new interim positions.
Jie Chen, PhD, has been appointed associate dean for academic and student affairs and Aaron Johnson, PhD, has been appointed associate dean for research and community engagement. Each has served as interim associate deans since August 2023.

Following an extensive national candidate search, Beth NeSmith, PhD, has been selected as the next dean of Augusta University’s College of Nursing. NeSmith’s appointment took effect on May 20.

Inhibiting a tiny RNA whose levels significantly increase with age, along with problems like weaker bones and sagging muscles, may be a way to keep our bodies more youthful and healthy, scientists say. MicroRNAs help regulate gene expression and consequently the function of our cells, and several, including one called microRNA-141-3p, have been implicated in the ills of aging, like increasing levels of potentially damaging chronic inflammation and shrinking muscle mass.
