The Little Rock Zoo broke ground Tuesday on “Project Zoo: Wildly Reimagined,” a $12 million construction project that will remodel a significant portion of the zoo and bring new and returning animals, including capybaras. Expected to be completed in fall of next year, planned improvements include a complete remodel of the zoo’s entry plaza, upgrades to several animal habitats and viewing spaces, and a renovation of the amphitheater, according to the zoo’s website.

Arkansas’s Monument to Unborn Children, a planned public memorial to aborted fetuses at the state Capitol, has only raised about $19,000 of the $950,000 needed in private donations for construction, according to a New York Times article published Sundaywhich included an appearance by Arkansas Times Editor-in-Chief Austin Gelder. Gov. Sarah Sanders signed a bill calling for construction of the monument into law in 2023.

The city of Little Rock is opening several cooling centers for residents as Arkansas braces for the first significant heat wave of the summer. Starting Monday, three cooling centers will be open to the public at Dunbar Community Center, 1001 W. 16th St.; Southwest Community Center, 6401 Baseline Road; and West Central Community Center, 8616 Colonel Glenn Road. The centers will be open during the week from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The Little Rock Board of Directors voted 7-1 Tuesday to approve Delphone Hubbard, the city’s fire chief, as Little Rock’s new city manager. The board took a public vote after discussing Mayor Frank Scott Jr’s nomination of Hubbard for more than an hour in an executive session. Ward 5 Director Lance Hines was the only “no” vote. At-Large Director Antwan Phillips and Ward 2 Director Ken Richardson, who hasn’t been seen at a board meeting since May 2024, were both absent.
