Standing atop a jumble of pink granite on the very edge of Mount Desert Island’s southwestern shore, Bass Harbor Head Light Station has always been a welcoming beacon when we’ve cruised up Jericho Bay toward the island. But we’d never visited the small white tower and its red-roofed keeper’s house. Last summer, I decided it was time we did. Besides, I’d been wanting to go to Bass Harbor.

All photos by Mimi Bigelow SteadmanWhen the pocket-sized South Bristol Gut drawbridge raises its bascule arm skyward, we wave a thank-you to the bridgetender and slip through the narrow, walled passage between the mainland and Rutherford Island. Arriving in the small harbor to the east, we’re surrounded by a fleet of handsome fishing boats resting near the salty docks of Osier’s Wharf and the South Bristol Fisherman’s Co-op.

If you go to Blue HillOn the WaterHarbormaster Nick Niehoff says larger vessels should anchor closer to the mouth of the harbor. To proceed into the inner harbor, follow the well-marked channel and, after clearing the last buoy (Red Nun 8), continue on a heading of 300 degrees (true) to the anchorage, with about 14 feet at low. Niehoff advises carefully consulting a chart as there are several ledges near the anchorage that might not be readily apparent.

A short dirt lane led through the woods to a yellow cottage, its windows framed with green shutters. Inside, a stone fireplace, slouchy furniture, a wall of yellowing maps, and a corner full of fishing gear radiated the old-shoe welcome of a traditional Maine camp. Jeff Hamilton’s great grandfather built this one, half way down the eastern shore of Cobbosseecontee Lake in 1912. Six generations later, the retreat in Central Maine is still treasured by his family.

On the WaterA new town landing is scheduled to be completed in July. Daytime tie-ups at the floats will be permitted, but boats may not remain overnight. The Port Clyde General Store owns a number of transient moorings; check with them regarding availability. Note that the harbor is open to the south and southwest; it can be uncomfortable when wind is coming from those directions. DoDown a narrow lane a mile from the heart of the village, Marshall Point Light boasts a scenic and accessible site.
