INTRODUCTION Plastic pollution is increasingly a concern to policymakers and the public because of its persistence in the environment, potential for long-range transport, and threat to wildlife and human health. Mechanical and chemical abrasion of plastics results in microplastics (<5 mm in size) that come in many shapes, sizes, and polymer types (Browne et al., 2011; Cole et al., 2011).
