After numerous years of writing best-of-book lists for the year, my recurring realization is this: it never gets easier! When I write these lists, I think about the reader who might not stumble upon these lists at the library, on social media, or in the aisles of a local store. My goal is to share something unique. This list includes a few books my kids find hilarious, some intriguing nonfiction books, a cookie cookbook, and two translated gems that are a bit quirky yet wonderful.

VOTE. It comes from the Latin word votum, meaning “vow, wish, promise.” Back in fourth grade, we had a mock election to mimic the real one happening in November 1988. The candidates were George H.W. Bush and Michael Dukakis. I voted for the guy with the cool last name. Never mind political parties or promised policies, my nine-year-old mind wasn’t ready for high-stakes political involvement yet. Thankfully, my voting tactics have evolved since then.

Whoosh! And just like that, another year comes to a close. Even after writing end-of-year lists for several years, choosing the best books never gets easier. Maybe that’s a good thing, though. For one thing, it means an endless supply of top-notch children’s literature is being published each year. For another, it means the world of storytelling is alive and well. This year’s list illustrates just that. From silly to heartfelt, here are the best picture books of 2023.
