After handing out medals at the finish line, the Detroit Free Press Marathon has earned its own award. The 2023 marathon achieved zero-waste status by diverting the majority of race material from the landfill. That means organizers diverted 90% or more of waste produced by the event.

On a warm summer night more than 130 years ago, a young steamship unknowingly set sail for the last time — only to be found intact under hundreds of feet underwater, 40 miles from Holland. At 135 feet long, the Milwaukee was commissioned by the Northern Transportation Co. of Ohio in 1868 to transport passengers and goods from Ogdensburg, New York, westward to Chicago.

Enjoy the warm sun while you can, because Tuesday is set to bring lots of rain — and potentially a weak tornado, weather officials are warning. The morning will be littered with rain showers and temperatures in the mid-40s to low 50s. Another round of rain will come in the afternoon into the evening as a cold front settles in for the week, blessing us with chilly below-50 temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.

We're still in the first week of spring and in true Michigan fashion, it's snowing. A winter weather advisory is in effect until midnight for most of the metro Detroit region Friday with 3-6 inches of snowfall blanketing the area, marked by periods of heavy snow bursts, forecasters said. The heaviest snow is expected along the Interstate 96 corridor. Meanwhile, in Wayne and Washtenaw counties, 1-3 inches of snow is expected, according to the National Weather Service in White Lake.
