TORONTO — Despite dropping Thursday’s finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Toronto Blue Jays have won six of their last seven series. Toronto’s lineup bounced back after a sluggish series in Philadelphia, scoring 18 runs against Arizona, but a late offensive push Thursday wasn’t enough to complete the sweep. Kevin Gausman allowed seven earned runs in the 9-5 loss, with the Jays moving to 40-34 on the season.

TORONTO — On Monday, Myles Straw went to Josh Naylor’s baby shower. On Tuesday night, Naylor showed up for Straw, too. Long before Addison Barger launched a walk-off homer to lift the Blue Jays to a 5-4 win, Straw went crashing into the outfield wall, twisting his ankle on the warning track. Naylor saw Straw lying on the turf as he pulled into second base, putting both hands on his helmet in shock before checking with the umpire and stepping off the bag.

Trey Yesavage’s day was almost over. He’d surpassed 100 pitches and his velocity was starting to tick down. There was a question whether he would even start the 2024 NCAA Regional contest against Wake Forest, thanks to a partially punctured lung suffered two weeks earlier. But Yesavage was through seven innings, outdueling future No. 2 pick Chase Burns, and now he was staring at the manager walking toward him.

PHILADELPHIA - Phillies fans pushed forward as the bottom of the fourth inning spiralled. Bowden Francis worked through 3 2/3 shutout innings before he lost Nick Castellanos on a seven-pitch walk. Then Max Kepler got a free pass and J.T. Realmuto took a pitch to the side. Every miss, the Citizens Bank Park crowd grew louder. Bryson Stott's run-scoring walk - louder. Otto Kemp hit by another pitch - louder.
