The Longhorns are playing on the road this week, with trips to Oxford, Mississippi, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana in what amounts to a pair of critical SEC games. Texas started the first leg in Oxford, where things began well for Rodney Terry and his team. The ‘Horns jumped out to a 13-point lead in the first half, but that lead dwindled to just four at halftime. Texas was a six-and-a-half-point underdog entering the contest, so any lead at the half was a positive for the Longhorns.

The Texas Longhorns head east this week to take on the No. 23 Ole Miss Rebels and former head coach Chris Beard. Chris Beard and the Texas program ended their relationship in January of 2023. Rodney Terry, an assistant under Beard, assumed the role of interim head coach when Beard left. While the Longhorns reached the Elite Eight that season under Terry’s leadership, there remains a feeling amongst the Texas fan base that the program has not fully recovered from the Chris Beard era in Austin.

Texas was able to get their first ranked win of the season defeating No. 22 Missouri 61-53. It was from a pretty game, but a win is a win, especially when you are sitting at 1-4 in conference play. The Longhorns shot just 34 percent from the field but Missouri managed to be even worse, shooting 31.3 percent. Texas deserves some credit on the defensive end, forcing Missouri to shoot just 4-22 from beyond the arc.

Texas welcomes No. 22 Missouri to Austin in what amounts to a must-win game for the Longhorns. The SEC gauntlet does not let up for Rodney Terry, as his team is in the middle of a four game stretch against ranked opponents. To put things into perspective as to how strong the conference is, seven of the first eight SEC games for Texas come against ranked opponents. It has been a difficult schedule to navigate, but there is no time for excuses.

Texas heads east to Gainesville, Florida to take on the fifth-ranked Florida Gators on Saturday. Todd Golden’s team has one of the top offenses in the country and is yet another example of how good the Southeastern Conference is in basketball this season. Florida is 15-2 overall but just 2-2 in conference play. One of those losses includes a 106-100 defeat to Kentucky – a game in which scoring 100 points simply wasn’t enough against the blue blood Wildcats.
