Reclaiming corporeal sublimation in Wilawan Wiangthong’s performanceIT ALL BEGAN WITH A PINK EGG. The room was dark, with sheets of bubble wrap carpeting the floor. A woman dressed in a silvery-gray tunic held up the egg, examining its fragile shell with a sense of rapture before raising it against a snakeskin-patterned circle projected on the wall. Across the space, two undecipherable shapes wrapped in red plastic were rolling and churning like human-size egg sacs.

In Doug Aitken’s five-channel video installation Howl (all works 2023), oil derricks spot the rolling, sun-bleached hills of a desolate valley in central California while plywood boards shutter local stores. Interspersed within these depictions of wide-open spaces, residents provide soundbites on the circumstances of living in this dying town. They tell of their hopes for the area, its oil-boom history, their lives and the wider future. ‘I want to travel the world.

This year it seemed that everyone arrived in Zurich during the days before Art Basel, although calling the event “Zurich Art Weekend,” when shows start opening on Tuesday, is getting a bit ridiculous (especially for the liver).
