House Speaker Mike Johnson said he plans to call for a vote on a bill to fix a glitch that has created a potential $1 billion hole in the D.C. budget, though the timing is still uncertain. Johnson told reporters Monday night that he has spoken with D.C. A GOP proposal to create an annual $20 fee for all U.S. vehicles — which has been criticized by members of both parties as a national car tax — was pulled Wednesday from budget reconciliation legislation. The chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Rep. Sam Graves, a Republican representing Missouri’s 6th District, had proposed the annual registration fee to try to eventually phase out the federal gas tax. But it was criticized by Republicans as well as Democrats.

Longtime Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly announced Monday that he will not seek reelection next year, after learning that the esophageal cancer he’s been fighting has returned. Connolly, who is serving his ninth term representing Virginia’s 11th District, also said he plans to step down “soon” from his post as the ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

Virginia U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine has a special connection to Pope Francis and still feels fortunate he was once able to meet him in St. Peter’s Square, where large crowds gathered Saturday for the pope’s funeral. The brief meeting took place in 2017 and is especially important to Kaine, who’s a devout Catholic and worked with Jesuit missionaries in Honduras four decades ago. Kaine recalls when Pope Francis was chosen as the first Latin American to become pontiff.
