Less than a minute after his number nine had been lit up in green on the substitution board, Tiago Coimbra latched onto a perfectly weighted long pass from Kareem Sow and burst into the York United penalty area. The Halifax Wanderers’ striker let the ball bounce a few times, and deftly lifted it over York goalkeeper Ivan Pavela with the outside of his right boot. The ball bounced once more, before nestling in the bottom right corner.

For the first time since lifting the North Star Cup at ATCO Field in November, Cavalry FC return to Spruce Meadows for their 2025 home opener on Friday night. It is sure to be a celebratory occasion at the grounds as Cavalry FC supporters welcome their team home following that 2024 triumph, as well as a historic victory in the home leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup tie with Liga MX side Pumas in February. That match was played at Starlight Stadium.

On Friday, the Canadian Premier League’s 2024 champions return to ATCO Field, where they are sure to get a heroes’ welcome in their 2025 home opener. A young Vancouver FC side, however, will be keen to spoil the party as they look for their first win of the season, and first-ever victory over Cavalry FC. The marquee match will be broadcast on TSN 3, as well as OneSoccer. Kick off is set for 4 p.m. PT / 5 p.m. MT / 7 p.m. ET.

As Canadian women’s national team players returned to their club sides, and the Canadian men played across the globe, it wasn’t quite as productive a week for national team players as perhaps the past few. But some important members of both sides still had some big performances, as Olivia Smith returned from injury to score for Liverpool, and Cyle Larin scored his first goal of 2025.

Match in a minute or lessA dominant Atlético Ottawa gave a masterclass in their new attacking identity during a 4-1 victory over Vancouver FC in Langley on Sunday night. For the second consecutive week, David Rodríguez scored the opening goal for Atleti, before setting up Kevin Dos Santos in the 37th minute. Ballou Tabla made it three for Ottawa before half-time, while Monty Patterson scored his first CPL goal off the bench in the second half.
