What’s happening: A group of 17 small businesses scattered throughout Northwest Michigan have been awarded a total of $75,000 in small business grants, the latest cohort of grantees to benefit from a partnership forged between the Northwest Michigan small businesses champions at 20Fathoms and Venture North. Winning businesses were each awarded approximately $4,500 in grants. Heads up, entrepreneurs: The application window for the next round of grants is open from May 16 through May 25.

What’s happening: The City of Fennville and its Downtown Development Authority have announced plans to activate a vacant downtown lot and transform it into a community asset, complete with an amphitheater, splash pad, public greenspace, and more. The project, dubbed City Square Park, will create a new central gathering space in downtown Fennville built to accommodate concerts and other events.

What’s happening: City officials and project stakeholders gathered at James C. Nelson Park in Sterling Heights earlier this month, joining together for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting of the newly opened Community Garden. The garden offers more than 115 garden beds and a host of additional amenities spread across 32,000 sq. ft. of Nelson Park.
