A planned march in support of KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi was cancelled on Friday. The march was set to get under way from Curries Fountain Stadium in Durban. Mkhwanazi was facing an investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) after allegations he shielded an official at Qalakabusha prison in Empangeni who was about to be arrested for allegedly selling drugs to prisoners.

More than 10,300 educator assistants will be employed in KwaZulu-Natal after the provincial Treasury allocated R66.7bn to the education department. Tabling his budget speech at the provincial legislature in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday, finance MEC Francois Rodgers said the KZN government had prioritised education by increasing its spending by R3.7bn.
