World / Feature / January 13, 2025 A Year After Israel Bombed My Family’s Home, I’m Still Trapped in the RuinsWhile the physical scars have mostly healed, the emotional ones remain as fresh as the day Israel brough my home down on me and my family. From the ruins: After Israel bombed the Mhawishes’ home, all that remained intact was a plastic ladybug his son was holding before the blast.(Mohammed R.

At around 7:30 a.m. on the morning of Dec. 7, 2023, my son’s tiny footsteps echoed down the hallway as I reached for my cup of tea. After a week away from home reporting on Israel’s onslaught on the Gaza Strip, which was then entering its second month, I had returned the previous night to be with my family. I was trying to create a sense of calm within our walls, away from the chaos and terror outside. It lasted only seconds.

A massive crowd gathers outside a relief agency in Gaza, desperate for bags of wheat flour amid widespread starvation and disease caused by months of siege and bombardment. (Photo courtesy of Mohammed Mhawish)I saw online a picture of a father digging through the rubble of what used to be his home in a narrow alley in Gaza City. His hands were raw, his …

I was born under a sky lit by explosions instead of stars. My mom brought me into the world in the middle of war, during the Second Intifada, and if I’d known what was waiting for me, I might’ve slipped back into her womb. But babies don’t get a choice, so out I came — headfirst into war, blockade, and a life shaped by survival. Now I’m 25, and nothing has changed. Gaza, again, is living through hell. The drones buzzing, warplanes roaring, and sleepless nights have become a permanent routine.

The news of Donald Trump’s election victory was received in Gaza with weary resignation. After more than a year of war, displacement, and starvation, Palestinians in the Strip have stopped expecting anything from American leaders — except more of the same. Whether it’s Trump, Joe Biden, or Kamala Harris, hope doesn’t register with us anymore. Instead, each new leader in Washington reinforces the same painful reality: unconditional military aid for Israel and policies that leave Gaza smoldering.

While Americans voted in their next president on Tuesday, the message to us Palestinians remained as clear as ever: America’s promises of freedom and justice don’t include us. But the election does have an outsize stake in our safety and survival. For my family and millions of Palestinians, this moment is all too familiar: the fear, the helplessness, the resigned certainty that nothing ever really changes. And still it hurts, because the stakes in this election couldn’t be more personal.

“What does it mean to be a survivor?”People ask me that sometimes, and sometimes they just assume they know. Some see survival as this clean thing, like a story of resilience and triumph. I’ve been called strong after so, so many “I’m sorry about that” sort of things. But let’s not make a snap judgement. We’ll come to that. I’ve known survival as something completely different. It’s something I can’t quite describe, something I feel in my chest, my bones, my coffee — a heaviness that never goes away.
