Mughal-e-Azam was made in 1960. Perhaps the fact that at its core, the film is a tale of rebellion is what allows it to interact with and influence people of all ages—even close to 65 years after the film’s original release. Or perhaps it is the fact that what epitomised this timeless love story was ‘sacrifice’—an act that asks more of the human condition than anything else. Or maybe it was Anarkali’s defiance—an unambiguous statement of resistance against authority and oppression.

Arjun Kapoor’s Parma Chauhan in Habib Faizal’s Ishaqzaade was not really a good guy. One could even make a reasonably plausible case that Parma 1.0 was Rannvijay Singh-lite from the 2010s. Until he chose to be more than an animal. Until something within him finally allowed him to reason with his masculinity. Until he could love without an agenda. But, before the inflection point in Parma’s arc, Faizal gives us one of the most wickedly delicious pre-interval plot twists.

Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox would never be the poignant and humble masterpiece that it is were it not for Irrfan Khan’s many silences. It would never be the film it is were it not for Nawazuddin’s stubbornly infectious energy. Were it not for that scene involving a ceiling fan. Were it not for that dialogue about the smell of an old man. Were it not for that empty lunchbox.Were it not for those Mumbai moments.
