While Mad Green has been involved in martial arts since childhood, they were tired of looking around and feeling like they were the only queer person who could physically defend themselves. “I am sick of being the only person I know who knows how to fight, and I really want the rest of the queer people in my life to be able to fight,” said Green, who uses they/them pronouns.

Most Americans say they or a family member has experienced gun violence, according to a 2023 KKF Health study. Ray Strickland wanted to capture the grief of losing a loved one to gun violence in his song “Time for Change.” Check out his performance of the song that won him the 2023 Teen Talent Competition. The song was inspired by the then-high school senior’s experiences grieving loved ones lost to gun violence. “It’s a cancer, and it needs to change,” Strickland said.

While many cities awarded initial educational TV licenses to universities, St. Louis took a unique approach. Instead, a commission was formed which sought out input from local leaders in business, politics, and cultural institutions.

“A sanctuary,” is how owner Matthew Foggy Jr. describes his rink. “Parents know that they can drop their kids off and we are going to take care of them,” he said. Regulars Joe “Crazy Legs” Hill and Kevin “Hollywood” Brown have been coming to the rink since they were kids and agree it feels like a family. “This is a different world when you cross through that threshold,” Brown said.
