Students from schools across the Northern Shenandoah Valley gathered at Jim Barnett Park on Wednesday to release into Wilkins Lake the brook trout they raised in their classrooms this year. The kids gathered along the lake's edge, waiting patiently as their teachers scooped the fish into plastic cups and nets, and then watched as their trout swam into the water, almost immediately disappearing as they camouflaged against the mud, algae and plants under the surface.

Apple Pie Ridge Elementary School in Frederick County is celebrating 50 years this Friday. Two Winchester Public Schools elementary schools piloted a program this year that helps young students get involved with the internationally-recognized Rotary Club's mission. Recently, as the club's activities wrapped up for the year, those involved with getting the program off the ground reflected on the process, and all the work that the student participants accomplished throughout the school year. Rotary Club is an organization that prioritizes community service.

BERRYVILLE — The Clarke County Democrats facilitated the area's latest "hands off democracy" rally last week, one of many May 1 protests across the country against President Donald Trump's agenda. The large group gathered at Rose Hill Park in Berryville, where speakers criticized the Trump Administration's actions surrounding a wide array of issues. A live band performed songs like Buffalo Springfield's 1966 hit "For What It's Worth," a tune often associated with 1960s counterculture movements.

WINCHESTER — Despite a dreary weather forecast and a few foreboding morning raindrops, the sun came out just in time for the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival's Grand Feature Parade on Saturday afternoon. Revelers lined the streets along the 1.5-mile parade route, which wound around downtown from Cork Street to Handley Boulevard. Their cheers and applause filled the air as more than 300 floats, vehicles, marching bands and community groups passed by.

WINCHESTER — Against the backdrop of pageantry and fanfare and before a sea of pink and green, 16-year-old Mary Clare Davis was officially crowned Queen Shenandoah XCVIII on a warm, sunny Friday afternoon. In what was described as a colorful, majestic and time-honored tradition, Davis descended through the aisles of John Handley High School's Patsy Cline Theatre wearing a sparkling white gown and escorted by her father, Maury Davis.
