She started writing as a teenager and in 2014 began to be published in literary journals and magazines, including Granta and The Poetry Review. From those beginnings, she has become a critically acclaimed writer and was named as London’s Young Poet Laureate in 2018. Mehri’s work speaks strongly to this year’s National Poetry Day theme of refuge.

    We meet again, without fanfare. Street names introduce us to ourselves. The Blackamoor‘s Head, Blackamoor Alley, Black Boy’s Court. In this reflection, we are distorted. Our faces reveal the gashes of our separation. Dahomey, Ardra, Antigua, Spanish Town. We name this lonely truth: freedom. It crouches between us,Shaky-legged & newborn. Some run with it, this freedom of scraps & damp alleyways. They cluster in the dark,Dot the city with their clutched need. The profane mewling of hungry children.
