By Jan 7, 2020, the aetiological agent of these severe cases of pneumonia was identified as a novel coronavirus, named SARS-CoV-2, and the disease the virus caused was subsequently labeled COVID-19. On March 11, 2020, WHO declared COVID-19 as a pandemic and the race for vaccine and antiviral development commenced, with the first effective COVID-19 vaccines rolled out in early 2021.
