The government’s decision to scale back funding for solicitor-apprenticeships has devastated many aspiring solicitors at a firm that has long supported the apprenticeship route to qualification, the Gazette has learned – with paralegals describing the move as a major step backwards for social mobility. Fletchers Solicitors has supported 104 apprentices since the government introduced an apprenticeship levy in 2017. The firm currently has 41 solicitor, graduate solicitor and CILEX apprentices.

Prospective home buyers and sellers will soon be able to see the number of ‘avoidable’ errors that conveyancers make in applications to HM Land Registry – a move that has been welcomed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. The number of requests (requisitions) that Land Registry has to send out for further information costs the conveyancing sector an estimated £19m a year. Land Registry already publishes data on the number of requisitions that conveyancing firms receive.

The government has confirmed it will continue to fund solicitor-apprenticeships – but only until an aspiring solicitor turns 22. Plans announced by the Department for Education last year would have seen funding axed for Level 7 apprenticeships, which includes solicitor-apprenticeships. However, the department today announced that Level 7 funding will continue for those aged between 16-21 and existing apprentices. The changes will come into force from January.
