    One in four flights in Australia are delayed. At least one in 50 are cancelled. Australian governments have never legislated consumer protections for air passengers. Sunday’s announcement of a draft charter of passenger rights goes some way towards addressing the frustrations of the system but it left out the most important issue: the need for cash compensation for delayed flights. When a flight is significantly delayed in Canada, every passenger receives $400. In the US, $100.

    For more than a week politicians have been peppered with enquiries about their dealings with Qantas and Virgin. In my previous career as a paediatric neurologist and medical researcher I had lounge memberships by virtue of many hours in planes travelling to conferences. When I was elected in 2022, I accepted membership of the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge and Virgin’s Beyond club. It seemed like they came with the job.

    660 000 Australians are participants in the National Disability Insurance Scheme, and 400 000 work in NDIS-related jobs. Our country needs the NDIS, but it’s expanded too quickly in recent years, as state-based services have withered on the vine. 11% of five- to seven-year-old Australian boys, and 5% of five- to seven-year-old girls, are now NDIS participants. At the current rate of growth, its cost could increase to as much as $100 billion a year by 2032. This is simply unsustainable.

    By putting billions of dollars towards critical minerals and green hydrogen, Australia is finally getting serious about a clean energy future. The federal government should be lauded for its efforts to make us a clean energy superpower with its Future Made in Australia plan. Yet the government has missed a big – perhaps the biggest – piece of the puzzle. Alongside critical minerals and green hydrogen, the government should make big plays to support the rise of the humble home battery and heat pump.

    From 1 July the only vapes available in this country should be those prescribed by medical practitioners and dispensed by pharmacies. As a paediatrician who has witnessed the extraordinary increase in childhood vaping addiction in Australia, I wish our government had the courage to do this years ago. As a politician, I’m watching with concern the pushback from the tobacco and vaping lobby – and the political parties they support.
