By Montana Findley/The Mountain Press An in-county rivalry was in store on the hardwood as the Gatlinburg-Pittman Highlanders (18-5) played host to the Pigeon Forge Tigers (12-8). The contest went down to the wire, with the Highlanders holding on to take a 54-44 win. With a close race for seeding across District 2-AA, Highlanders' head coach Rashid Moore said each district contest in the regular season becomes all that much more important.

Pigeon Forge High School’s Andrew Lewis wrapped up his freshman year by becoming the school’s first athlete to medal at the TSSAA State Decathlon. Lewis has added to his resume before heading into his sophomore year, bringing home a medal at the 2024 adidas Track Nationals. The 2024 adidas Track Nationals were held at Marcus T. Johnson Track in Greensboro, North Carolina, on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

The Tennessee Smokies wrapped up their series against the Chattanooga Lookouts on Saturday, July 6. The Smokies nearly pulled off the sweep in the series, winning the first five contests, but fell short Saturday night. Friday, July 5, saw the Smokies take a 9-6 win over the Lookouts.

CHATTANOOGA — The Tennessee Smokies took on the Chattanooga Lookouts in game four of their six-game series on Thursday, July 4. The Smokies remain unbeaten in the series, taking a 6-2 win. Connor Noland picked up the win on the mound for the Smokies, striking out 11 batters while only allowing three hits across his seven innings pitched. Felix Stevens and Christian Franklin led the way at the plate for the Smokies, batting 2-4 with an RBI and 2-3 respectively.

KNOXVILLE — Pigeon Forge High School alum Dylan Loy fulfilled a childhood dream as he helped the Tennessee Volunteers bring home the 2024 National Championship. As the dust settles from their College World Series win, Loy reflects on his first year at UT, and looks ahead for what his sophomore season will bring. Last Monday, June 24, the Tennessee Volunteers were crowned National Champions for the first time in program history.

Seymour High School’s Patrick Doyle has built the Lady Eagles into a powerhouse when it comes to girls’ lacrosse in the state of Tennessee. Doyle was honored for his work at the helm of the Lady Eagles program as he was named 2024 Tennessee Lacrosse Coach of the Year. Doyle started his coaching career at 16 years old as an assistant for his father. From hockey, to baseball, football, soccer, Doyle eventually led the charge to bring lacrosse to Sevier County.

The Tennessee Smokies continued their series against the Birmingham Barons on Thursday, June 27, picking up their first win of the second half of the season, 4-1. Antonio Santos picked up the win on the mound for the Smokies, striking out three batters across five innings pitched. Alex Troop stepped onto the mound for three innings for Tennessee, striking out five batters without surrendering a hit. James Triantos continued his hot streak from the plate, batting 1-3 with three RBIs Thursday night.

The Tennessee Smokies continued their six-game series against the Birmingham Barons on Wednesday, June 26. The Smokies rallied from behind late in this one, but ultimately fell short, 8-7. Brandon Birdsell commanded the mound throughout 5.2 innings for the Smokies, striking out four batters. Jeff Belge and Blake Whitney each recorded a pair of strikeouts of their own in relief on the mound. Matt Shaw led the way at the plate, batting 3-3 with two RBIs for the Smokies.

The Tennessee Smokies are on the road this week for a six-game series against the top-seeded Birmingham Barons. Game one on Tuesday, June 25, saw the Smokies fall short 9-3. The Smokies (40-28) finished the first half of the season just one half of a game behind the Barons (41-28) for the top spot overall in the Southern League standings. However, the second half of the season got off to a rocky start, falling to 0-1 after their first contest against the Barons.
