FORT WAYNE – On Thursday, Big Brothers Big Sisters celebrated all its volunteers with a Fall Harvest Festival-themed 2024 Volunteer Recognition Dinner. The five volunteers — who embraced their role as mentor and friend with particular vigor and who demonstrated the impactful results to prove it — were announced as the Bigs of the Year for all of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana, according to a provided news release.

BURKET – A concern about a property owner burning a shed was brought up during the Burket Town Council meeting Thursday. Councilwoman Lena Ball said a resident knocked down their shed and started burning it. Council President Bill Rayburn said the fire department went down and told the property owner they couldn’t burn the shed and the fire had to be put out. The pile of debris is still in the resident’s yard.

The first reading of the budget ordinance was held Sept. 12. The general fund advertised amount is $33,006,557. It is expected to raise $14.8 million of that through taxes. The assessed value estimate is $7,683,102,659, with an estimated rate of $0.1926 per $100 of assessed valuation.
