After a string of losses in Lubbock this past weekend, Houston softball came back to shut out Houston Christian University in an 11-0 home victory at Cougar Softball Stadium on Tuesday. The Cougars’ offense powered their way to victory by recording 11 runs on 11 hits, leading to a run rule in the fifth inning. Freshman two-way Brooke Wells and sophomore infielder Makenna Mitchell both hit their ninth home run of the season, setting a dominating tone against the Huskies early in the game.

The day before spring officially began, two local residents were already embracing the warm weather. Betty and Mavis, two of the four pelicans who basically think of Potter’s Seafood in Southport as “home,” returned to the yacht basin on March 19 after spending the winter at Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter in Oak Island. The two birds were brought to Potter’s back deck by Sea Biscuit founder Mary Ellen Rogers and two volunteers who were excited to help with the release.

Houston softball bounced back from a tough weekend series against BYU, defeating McNeese State 10-6 in a midweek game at Cougar Softball Stadium on Tuesday, March 25. The Cougars came from behind after trailing 2-1 in the first inning, scoring five runs in the second to take control of the game. Freshman two-way Brooke Wells was the standout performer, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple, an RBI and a walk, while also contributing a key defensive play.

Who would imagine that the plastic bag, bottle cap or straw they were about to recycle might serve a bigger purpose? Members of the Oak Island Art Guild, that’s who. Guild members talked about the project at their December meeting and aimed to have their works completed by January. The idea was to collect recyclables - not necessarily trash, but clean recyclables - and to make art with it. Most ended up being plastic.

On March 10, 10 artists gathered upstairs at Franklin Square Gallery for a party. A painting party. The members of the Associated Arts of Southport were there to paint 53 pottery bowls, just a small fraction of the estimated 1,000 to 1,200 bowls that will be available for this year’s Empty Bowls event planned for Oct. 14. The paint they used was underglaze, which is similar to watercolor, with some going on deep like acrylic paint and others light like a watercolor.

The Cougars have often been down to as few as six available players, and three key players: senior forward Maliyah Johnson, senior guard Kateri Poole and senior forward Avalon Miller all sustained season-ending injuries. “It’s been a crazy year with all the injuries,” coach Ronald Hughey said.

Houston women’s basketball endured a crushing 92-47 defeat against Baylor on Wednesday, marking the Cougars’ worst defensive performance of the season allowing a season-high 92 points. The Cougars continue to deal with adversity this season as they only had six available players for this matchup. “It is admirable what they are doing and how hard they fight,” Baylor’s coach Nicki Collen said.
